REOG PONOROGO History


Reog Poinorogo is an dance art that still exist today and it became a debated topic some months ago. It claimed by Indonesia neighbor, Malaysia as the it’s creation, meanwhile it has been known that it originally art from indonesia.

Reog Ponorogo is a creation of Ponorogo people. You can see in portal of Ponorogo town there are two statues, Warok and Gemblak that become icon of reog Ponorogo. It has become an object that can invite tourist attention. As in reog show there are some attraction that folowed by all of dancer.

This traditional dance was created by Ki Ageng Kutu, a Politician in Majapahit Kingdom period. It used by Ki Ageng Kutu to give illusion for Majapahit King, Bra Kertabumi. Bra kertabumi was a king of Mojopahit who prefer his collegant from China that Ki Ageng Kutu. Meanwhile Ki Ageng Kutu predicted that because of Kertabumi collegat brough destroyment of Majapahit kingdom. Realize that Ki Ageng Kutu did not has enough soldier he created a dance that called Reog Ponorogo to give an illusion for Kertabumi king.

In Reog Ponorogo we can see lion head Mask which become Kertabumi icon. up oof this mask is placed many bristles as the icon of influence that was brough by Kertabumi Collegant. we also can see there are many Gemblak dancer ride horse icon accompany Warok.



One of challenge in Reog Ponorogo is the mask that used has weight till 50 kg and it is rise within teeth oonly. This mask is iKi Ageng Kutu icon.

To day This traditional dance can be found in some ceremony such marriage. Usually Reog ponorogo scenario is matched on the situation. When it held in marriage ceremony it containt of love scenario.

There are some part of dance, two opening dance one main dance. The first opening dance is carried out by 6-8 strong man with full black costum and red face. then second opening dance was carried out by Some girls. Then it continue with main dance.

This dance also has studied and show in some big countries in Europe. There are many tourist who come to see the beauty of this tourist object.
